Important Children’s Health Issues

Issues concerning children’s health are ever changing with time. Currently our children face many new challenges and problems with their health and welfare.

Obesity
Obesity is perhaps the United States’ number one children’s health issue. 16% of children ages 6-19 are considered overweight or obese (above the 95th percentile for weight in relation to height), with numbers that keep climbing. Various factors play a part in this children’s health issue: if parent(s) are overweight, socioeconomic status, inactivity, and, of course, nutrition. Hispanic youths are at a higher risk to be overweight. Obesity specifically in girls, depends on their socioeconomic status; if they are of low income, the likelihood of being overweight is significantly higher than if they are of the middle or upper class. The challenge we are facing now is how to prevent childhood obesity and help already obese children lose weight. Unfortunately, some parents try to shame their children to losing weight, which can ultimately lead to eating disorders and emotional problems. Children and teens lose weight the same way adults do: they need to find a method that works for them, whether it is going to a nutritionist or a weight-loss camp. Most importantly, becoming active and having a support network are key factors.

Teen Pregnancy
After a 14-year decline in teen pregnancies in the United States, they are on the rise again. According to the CDC, 2008 saw an overall national increase in teenage pregnancies by 3%. The rise in specific states, mainly Southern states, showed higher rises in percentages of teenage pregnancies. Teen mothers account for 11% of births in the U.S.. Experts are unsure of why after 14 years the rate of teen mothers went up. The question is now, how do we make it go back down? It has been suggested that the ever-present “abstinence only” policy of school sex education programs should be re-vamped and include instructions on how to have safe sex. Our daughters need strong role models to help them through all of society’s unrealistic expectations.

ADHD
Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a common mental disorder among children and adolescents and is one of the most concerning of children’s health issues. ADHD is characterized by impulsiveness, hyperactivity and inattention. If ADHD is not treated, it can travel with the child into adulthood, which it does for over half of children with this diagnosis, and pose further mental disorders. According to the CDC, 7.5% of children ages 3-17 are diagnosed with ADHD, and 1/3 do not have the hyperactivity component. Learning how to treat this disorder is very important in relation to helping your children cope with this possible life long mental disorder. A wide variety of medications, such as Ritalin, are often used. Behavioral therapy for children and parents is another popular approach. Treating ADHD involves a lot of trial and error to find out which method of treatment will be the best for your child or adolescent.

Autism
The Mayo Clinic describes autism as a serious developmental problem that usually occurs in children under 3 years of age with varying symptoms, all of which affect the child’s ability to communicate and interact with others. Up to 6 out of 1000 children is affected with this disorder. The cases of autism are rising, which could be accounted for by more accurate diagnoses, but professionals are unsure. In recent news, it has been suggested that autism could be related to immunizations that are given to children, as children receive more shots now than ever. Another suggestion is that lack of vitamin D might help cause autism. In the medical world, there are many speculations of what causes autism, however, there has not been a proven trigger for the disease. Autism is much like ADHD in respect to that there is not one standard treatment; it depends very much on the individual. Depending on the severity of the diagnosis, occupational therapy and/or behavior therapy are the first places to begin. Parents are also encouraged to take part in treatment programs to learn the best ways to cope with this diagnosis.

Bipolar Mania Reviews & Tips

Bipolar disorder is also called BPD or perhaps known as manic depression and it is a disorder that’s known by severe mood swings. Mood swings occur in most people; however, someone that has bipolar disorder experiences extreme conditions of both depression and intense elation and over optimism.

Sometimes it is dangerous because the depression might be so severe these people can’t seem to function through those times and also think about or act out suicidal thoughts. However, the excited (upswing) often leads to high-risk conduct like over spending, and activities they might not otherwise take part in.

Lots of individuals with bipolar mood disorder will also have times of normality between the mood swings when they function and come to feel much like everyone else. Certain individuals with BPD may encounter mood swings often and of shorter duration and others sometimes have lengthier periods of both moods.

BPD might start as soon as the teens however a diagnosis may be delayed because the mood swings might be ignored as being normal teenager moodiness or even attributed to ADHD. By age 25, the symptoms are more definite and diagnosis made less difficult.

Complicating the proper diagnosis of BPD is that someone might experience mixed states with signs and symptoms of both depressive and manic states present at the same time.

The causes of BPD are not known, some doctors suggest there could be a hereditary link but study results are inconsistent. Even so, individuals who go on to develop BPD may display signs and symptoms in early childhood. Based on some studies the symptoms are so subtle they can be easily wrongly recognized as standard behavior or even another matter such as hyperactivity.

Adults being affected by bipolar disorder will have problems in most areas of their life. The high periods cause them to become overly optimistic, participate in risky behavior, and be financially indiscrete or sexually promiscuous. The problems might be never-ending.

With periods of depression, someone experiencing bipolar mood disorder may not be in a position to function or to keep a job. Committing suicide can be a risk too.

There are a large number of medicines that may be used to handle bipolar disorder. The reason for that is that though some medicines work on some individuals, others display absolutely no indications of improving.

Lithium could be the only medicine shown to lessen the chance of suicide in depressed BPD patients. The medication Lamotrigine has been shown to be successful in preventing depression in various BPD individuals. Antipsychotic medicines might be utilized to combat agitation of the bipolar patient while in the manic stages.

When signs and symptoms are relieved and emotional swings are in remission the patient must still keep on taking the medicine or backslide is likely. Certain patients with BPD describe the effect of their relief medication as leading them to feel dull or stifled. This complicates medicine compliance with patients having bipolar disorder.

There are actually effective treatment options for people with bipolar disorder and mood stabilizers can be a main portion of treatment when helping stabilize the patient having bipolar disorder. Because the mood swings can be so damaging to personal relationships, financial status and work performance BPD is going to be dealt with aggressively in most instances.

A Teen Challenges Her Drinking Friends To Find Out More About Alcohol Abuse and Alcohol Addiction

Diane drank quite excessively on a regular basis with her friends. One Wednesday after all of her classes were finished, she started reflecting on the amount of alcohol she drank during a typical week and the hazardous and irresponsible drinking of her classmates. As a result of this, she civilly asked all of her drinking pals the following question: “what do we really know about alcoholism, binge drinking, alcohol abuse, and alcohol poisoning? Stated another way, how much alcohol addiction and alcohol abuse information do we really know? For our young age, we obviously drink in a hazardous manner and I am beginning to wonder if all of us are headed for a life filled with alcohol-associated problems in the near future.

I think we need to go online and find out all that is possible about binge drinking, alcohol poisoning, alcoholism, and alcohol abuse. And then if we have any issues that we really don’t comprehend after we complete our Internet research, we can schedule an appointment at the student health center at the college and ask Nurse Powell to help us understand what we don’t know.”

It Shouldn’t Come as a Big Surprise That What Diane Discussed Would Lead to a Heated Discussion

It shouldn’t come as a big surprise that what Diane said would set off a heated discussion. As a case in point, her closest friend since the first grade, Camryn, stated that they are too young and too healthy to be worried about abusive and careless drinking. Another drinking pal named Douglas thought that since most junior high and high school students drink there’s no valid reason why they should be any different. Another pal named Skylar said that all she wants to do is to have fun drinking with her friends. And still another buddy named Jerry in fact agreed with Diane mainly because both of his parents abused alcohol and both of his parents had a history of alcohol related problems.

Diane openly made it clear to her buddies that she “got” everything that they had said but that getting involved in abusive and unhealthy drinking at such a susceptible age truly cannot be very healthy or conducive toward establishing a meaningful life. When a couple of her pals asked what kind of alcohol difficulties Diane was discussing, Diane stated the following: alcohol-related diseases such as cancer, heart disease, and cirrhosis of the liver and other alcohol-related problems like alcohol poisoning (which can be fatal in some instances), alcoholism, and alcohol-related traffic accidents and fatalities.

Excessive and Abusive Drinking Typically Results in Alcohol-Related Problems

When Diane then noted that excessive and unhealthy drinking typically results in school, relationship, legal, and financial problems, some of her drinking pals finally started to comprehend how comprehensive and how unhealthy careless drinking can be. Without a doubt some of her friends opened up and started to reveal how these alcohol addiction and alcohol abuse effects had negatively affected some of their friends and their parents.

After emphasizing some of the alcoholism and alcohol abuse problems that are related to careless and abusive drinking, most of her friends seemed to agree to the idea about getting information on the web. They were, on the other hand, nervous about discussing their drinking circumstances with staff at school. As Diane reflected on this she whispered to herself, “at least they are willing to find out more about their hazardous drinking. This is a fantastic start.”
